Marvel Gaming Universe Idea Rejected: No Funding for MCU-Style Video Game Integration

Author : Lucas Update:May 02,2025

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has revolutionized the entertainment industry with its series of interconnected films and TV shows, creating a seamless narrative across multiple platforms. However, Marvel video games have not followed suit, with each game presenting its own standalone story. For instance, Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man series stands independently from Eidos-Montreal's Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Similarly, upcoming titles like Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Marvel's Wolverine, and Marvel's Blade are not linked to each other.

Yet, there was once an ambitious plan at Disney to create a Marvel Gaming Universe (MGU) that would mirror the success of the MCU in the gaming world. So, what happened to this promising idea?

On The Fourth Curtain podcast, hosts Alexander Seropian and guest Alex Irvine, both of whom worked on the MGU concept, shed light on its fate. Seropian, known for co-founding Bungie and developing Halo and Destiny, led Disney's video game division until his departure in 2012. Irvine, a veteran writer in the Marvel gaming sphere, contributed to the world-building and narrative of Marvel Rivals.

Irvine reminisced about the early days of his involvement with Marvel games and the initial vision for the MGU. "When I first started working on Marvel games, there was this idea that they were going to create a Marvel gaming universe that was going to exist in the same way that the MCU did," he said. "It never really happened."

Seropian revealed that the MGU was his brainchild, pitched during his tenure at Disney, before the MCU had fully taken off. "When I was at Disney, that was my initiative, 'Hey, let's tie these games together.' It was pre-MCU," he explained. "But it didn’t get funded."

Irvine, drawing from his experience with the innovative Halo alternate reality game I Love Bees, shared his vision for the MGU. "That was so frustrating because we came up with all these great ideas about how to do it," he said. He proposed integrating ARG elements, allowing players to navigate a shared space across different games, linking comics, and even creating original content. Despite their enthusiasm, the project never received the necessary funding.

The complexity of the MGU concept may have contributed to its downfall. Irvine noted that the intricacies of differentiating the MGU from comics and movies while maintaining consistency across platforms posed significant challenges. "Even back then, we were trying to figure out, 'If there's going to be this MGU, how is it different from the comics? How is it different from the movies? How are we going to decide if it stays consistent?' And I think some of those questions got complex enough that there were people at Disney who didn’t really want to deal with them," he explained.

It's intriguing to ponder what might have been if the MGU had been realized. Perhaps Insomniac's Spider-Man games could have shared a universe with Square Enix's Marvel's Avengers and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, with characters crossing over and culminating in a grand, Endgame-like event.

Looking forward, there's curiosity about whether Insomniac's upcoming Marvel's Wolverine game will share a universe with their Spider-Man series. Could Spider-Man or other characters make cameo appearances in Wolverine?

Ultimately, the MGU remains a fascinating 'what if' in the realm of video games, a concept that could have transformed the landscape of Marvel gaming but was never given the chance to flourish.
