Death Stranding 2: On the Beach director Hideo Kojima allegedly revamped the game mid-development after playtests yielded results that were "too positive" - a scenario that contradicted his artistic preference against creating mainstream content.
The insight comes from Yoann "Woodkid" Lemoine, the composer collaborating with Kojima on the sequel's soundtrack. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Lemoine detailed their creative process and the unique challenges of scoring for a dynamically evolving gaming experience.
Most remarkably, Lemoine recalled Kojima expressing concern when early testers showed excessive enthusiasm for the game. "That means something is wrong," Kojima told him. "We need to make adjustments."
"During a pivotal discussion around the halfway point of development, Kojima approached me saying, 'We have a problem,'" Woodkid recounted. "He was completely transparent - playtesters were enjoying the game too much, which signaled we needed to modify certain elements."
Kojima subsequently revised narrative elements and adjusted key gameplay mechanics, believing the initial version lacked sufficient emotional provocation and polarizing impact. "Universal approval indicates conventional, pre-digested content," Kojima explained. "I want players to gradually appreciate elements they initially resisted - that's how genuine connection forms."
Woodkid described this philosophy as transformative, teaching him to prioritize artistic integrity over widespread appeal. "The goal isn't to please audiences, but to challenge and move them," he reflected.
