Sony Europe's former CEO, Chris Deering, recently shed light on how securing exclusive rights to Rockstar Games' GTA franchise for the PlayStation 2 significantly boosted the console's sales and popularity. This strategic move was a direct response to the impending launch of Microsoft's Xbox console.
Sony Signed Special Deals for PS2
Acquiring Exclusive Rights to GTA Paid Off

In an insightful interview with GamesIndustry.biz at EGX in London last October, Deering explained that Sony's pursuit of GTA exclusivity was a calculated effort to counter the Xbox's debut in 2001. Sony reached out to multiple third-party developers and publishers, offering them exclusive deals for the PS2. Take-Two, Rockstar Games' parent company, accepted this proposal, leading to the release of three GTA titles exclusively for the PS2: GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas.
Deering admitted that Sony was concerned about Microsoft potentially offering similar exclusivity deals to bolster the Xbox's game library. "We were worried when we saw Xbox coming," he stated, highlighting the urgency that drove Sony to secure these exclusive agreements.

While GTA 1 and 2 had already achieved significant success, Deering initially harbored doubts about GTA 3's potential due to its shift from a top-down perspective to a fully 3D environment. However, this gamble paid off handsomely, contributing to the PS2's status as the best-selling video game console of all time.
"It was very lucky for us. And actually lucky for them, because they got a discount on the royalty they paid," Deering noted, emphasizing the mutual benefits of such deals, which are common across various platform-based industries, including modern social media platforms.
Rockstar Games’ Leap to 3D Environment

Grand Theft Auto III marked a pivotal moment for the franchise by introducing a 3D environment, departing from the top-down view of its predecessors. This innovation not only redefined open-world gaming but also transformed Liberty City into a vibrant, interactive metropolis teeming with sidequests and activities.
In a November 2021 interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Rockstar co-founder Jaime King explained that the company awaited the right technology to make this transition. "From a storytelling perspective, we knew it would be much more immersive if you could actually get down to the streets and go 3D," he said.
With the PS2's capabilities, Rockstar Games found the perfect platform to bring their vision to life. Despite the console's limitations, the three GTA titles released for the PS2 became some of the console's top-selling games, solidifying the franchise's legacy.
Why is Rockstar Games Silent About GTA 6?
Looking forward, the anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 continues to grow. Former Rockstar Games developer Mike York shared insights on his YouTube channel on December 5, suggesting that Rockstar's silence on GTA 6 is a deliberate marketing strategy. While prolonged silence might temper the excitement, York views it as "a really cool tactic." By withholding details, Rockstar fuels fan speculation and organic hype, keeping the community engaged without overt promotional efforts.

York also reminisced about the team's enjoyment of fan theories, citing the Mt. Chiliad mystery from GTA V as a notable example. These mysteries and fan speculations not only entertain the community but also keep the developers engaged and excited about their work. As GTA 6 remains largely a mystery with just one trailer released, the ongoing speculation ensures that the GTA community stays active and enthusiastic.
