FBC: Firebreak - The Unexpected Control Multiplayer FPS Hit

Author : Emily Update:May 14,2025

When Remedy Entertainment, renowned for crafting compelling single-player narratives in third-person games, announced their foray into multiplayer gaming with *FBC: Firebreak*, skepticism was understandable. Yet, after witnessing a hands-off demo, it's clear that this three-player PvE first-person multiplayer shooter, set six years post-*Control*, dispels any doubts. *Firebreak* stands out in the crowded multiplayer arena with its originality and unique charm, distinguishing itself from the typical military and sci-fi shooters. Game director Mike Kayatta emphasized the game's flexible playtime, stating, "We're not about daily check-ins. We're not interested in monthly grinds. We don't want to give anybody a second job." This philosophy makes *Firebreak* an appealing choice for gamers looking for a less demanding experience.

*FBC: Firebreak* offers a cooperative FPS experience without the usual grind. Whether you have 20 minutes or a few hours, the game accommodates with unlockable Perks and new character combinations, ensuring fresh gameplay. Set within the mysterious *Oldest House*, players take on the role of volunteer first responders, tackling crises with an array of bizarre weaponry. Your characters, ranging from secretaries to rangers, are the unsung heroes called upon when disaster strikes, despite being considered expendable by the Federal Bureau of Control.

Upon logging in, players select a Job (mission), a Crisis Kit (loadout), and set the Threat Level (difficulty) and Clearance Level, which dictates the number of zones to clear. These zones are segmented by containment doors, leading to different stages of the Job. In the demo, the Job "Paper Chase" unfolds in an ordinary office section of the FBC building, where players combat the spreading Hiss. Escaping safely with currencies for upgrades and new gear adds an exciting challenge, as lingering to collect more can complicate your return to HQ.

Play

*FBC: Firebreak* distinguishes itself further with its unique arsenal. From a hand-cranked snowball launcher that douses fires and sticky-note monsters to a zapper raining lightning storms, the weaponry boasts a quirky, homemade aesthetic. Traditional firearms like machineguns and shotguns are also available, particularly effective against the aforementioned sticky-note creatures. The mission's goal is to eliminate all sticky notes before they overrun the building, culminating in a battle against a gigantic sticky-note monster reminiscent of Spider-Man 3's Sandman.

Play

Beyond the weaponry, *Firebreak* introduces engaging in-universe mechanics. Ammo refills from office supply shelves, makeshift turrets, and stereo speakers that repel the Hiss enhance the gameplay. Unlockable Perks add depth, with examples like bullets returning to the clip after missing or extinguishing oneself by jumping. Stacking Perks can enhance their effects or share them with teammates, promoting strategic play.

The game accommodates solo, duo, and trio play, with a focus on accessibility and broad platform support. Remedy aims for lower minimum PC specs while also supporting advanced technologies like DLSS4, nVidia Reflex, and full ray-tracing. *FBC: Firebreak* will be Steam Deck verified and available on Xbox and PC Game Pass, PlayStation Plus Extra, and Premium from day one. Post-launch content and paid cosmetics are planned, but microtransactions will be limited to cosmetics.

While I haven't played *FBC: Firebreak* yet, the game's visuals and concept are promising. It's evident that this is not just another multiplayer shooter; it's a refreshing return to games that don't demand endless hours to enjoy, echoing a bygone era of gaming where flexibility and fun were paramount.
