The developer and publisher of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have firmly stated that they are not aiming to transform the game into a "full live service" model. This clarification comes in response to a backlash against community events that some players felt promoted "FOMO," or the fear of missing out—a tactic commonly used by live service games to spur rapid engagement and spending on limited-time virtual items.
FOMO is often criticized for fostering an unhealthy relationship between video games and their communities. In 2021, research commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted that many games employ "psychological nudges" to encourage purchases, such as the fear of missing out on limited-time items or special deals. Although Space Marine 2 does not feature loot boxes, the introduction of community events aimed at unlocking exclusive cosmetics sparked concerns among players, leading some to label the game as a "live service."
In response to these concerns, Space Marine 2's publisher, Focus Entertainment, and developer, Saber Interactive, acknowledged the "cold feedback" received since the introduction of the events. They reassured players that items available during these events would be accessible to everyone at a later date, emphasizing that the events are meant to allow the most dedicated players to unlock items in advance, not to create frustration or stress.
Focus Entertainment is taking steps to improve the player experience by simplifying the process of unlocking items. As a gesture of goodwill, they are offering the coveted emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, which ends on March 3, and was initially exclusive to players achieving victories with each of the six classes in Operations Mode.
As the community awaits the upcoming 7.0 update, which promises a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, Focus and Saber have also addressed broader content concerns, outlining their roadmap for the game's future. Following a record-breaking launch that saw Space Marine 2 sell 5 million copies and become the fastest-selling Warhammer video game ever, the developers are committed to maintaining a positive and engaging experience for all players.
