PlayStation's New Studio Takes on Bungie's "Gummy Bears" MOBA
A PlayStation studio has reportedly taken over development of Bungie's mysterious MOBA, codenamed "Gummy Bears." Initially conceived at Bungie, the project has undergone a significant shift, transferring to a newly formed PlayStation subsidiary comprised of approximately 40 former Bungie employees.
While details remain scarce, "Gummy Bears" is expected to be a unique departure from Bungie's previous titles. The game is rumored to incorporate a percentage-based damage system, reminiscent of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, foregoing traditional health bars. Instead, damage inflicted will determine knockback distance, with high enough damage potentially resulting in characters being knocked off the map.
The MOBA will reportedly feature three character classes (Attack, Defense, and Support) and multiple game modes. Its aesthetic is described as inviting, bright, and "lo-fi," a stark contrast to Bungie's previous darker, grittier styles. This stylistic shift is believed to be a conscious effort to attract a younger audience.
Development on "Gummy Bears" began at Bungie in 2020, and while the game is still in the works, its release date remains uncertain. The transition to a new PlayStation studio aligns with recent reports of a new PlayStation development facility established in Los Angeles. The project's long development cycle, coupled with its unique design choices, suggests a significant undertaking for the new studio.
