Take-Two Interactive confirms willingness to maintain legacy titles with active player bases. Learn what this means for the future of GTA Online.
GTA Online Could Continue Post-GTA 6 Launch
Active Community Will Determine GTA Online's Future
As anticipation builds for GTA 6, questions arise about GTA Online's fate. While Rockstar hasn't made official announcements, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick offered insights during an IGN interview on February 14, 2025.
Zelnick avoided specific project details but explained their general approach: "Speaking theoretically, we continue supporting our properties when players remain engaged with them."
The executive cited NBA 2K Online in China as an example, where both the original (2012) and sequel (2017) coexist due to strong player bases. "We've demonstrated willingness to maintain legacy titles when communities remain active," Zelnick stated.
This philosophy suggests GTA Online could persist after GTA 6's debut if players continue supporting it. Given the game's decade-long commercial success and cultural impact, an immediate shutdown appears unlikely.
Rockstar May Develop GTA 6 Platform with User Content
Reports suggest Rockstar may implement user-generated content (UGC) in GTA 6's online component, following models like Roblox and Fortnite. Digiday's February 17, 2025 report indicates discussions with top creators from these platforms.
The publication noted: "Rockstar has been consulting Roblox, Fortnite, and dedicated GTA content creators about developing custom experiences within the upcoming game." This could enable player modifications to game assets and environments.
Beyond expanding GTA 6's audience through creator involvement, this approach could generate additional revenue through virtual item sales and revenue-sharing programs. Rockstar has not officially commented on these reports.
Despite releasing in 2013, GTA 5 and Online remain among Twitch's top-viewed games. Incorporating creator tools could further boost engagement across multiple platforms when GTA 6 launches.
