FromSoftware, renowned for Elden Ring, has reassured fans that their commitment to crafting signature single-player experiences remains strong, even as they venture into multiplayer territories. The company recently unveiled The Duskbloods, an exclusive title for the Nintendo Switch 2 announced during the April 2 Nintendo Direct. This online multiplayer PvPvE game retains FromSoftware's distinctive Soulslike essence, which might surprise fans given the upcoming multiplayer title, Elden Ring Nightreign.

In a detailed entry on Nintendo’s new insider blog, Creator’s Voice, published on April 4, FromSoftware Director Hidetaka Miyazaki discussed their upcoming projects. He emphasized that despite the focus on multiplayer games, FromSoftware's dedication to traditional single-player titles remains unwavering.

Miyazaki stated, "While The Duskbloods is fundamentally an online multiplayer title, this does not indicate a shift towards a multiplayer-centric future for our company." He further added, "With the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring, we are committed to continuing the development of single-player games that uphold our traditional style."

Exploring the Role of Blood in The Duskbloods

Miyazaki shed light on the game’s thematic focus on blood. Players assume the role of "Bloodsworn," individuals endowed with superhuman abilities through the use of special blood. Although drawing parallels with vampires, Miyazaki clarified that these characters would not embody the traditional monstrous aspects of vampirism.

Central to the game's narrative is the quest for "The First Blood," which emerges during "The Twilight of Humanity," an event signaling the end of human civilization. This phenomenon unfolds across various timelines and settings.

Describing the game's settings, Miyazaki said, "The environments range from Gothic and Victorian styles to scenes depicting the final years of the early modern era, such as the train glimpsed in the trailer."

He further elaborated that blood in The Duskbloods serves as a conceptual element rather than a graphic depiction of injury. "Blood represents key themes within the game—its historical significance, the power it conveys, the destinies it intertwines, and a symbol of those who have transcended human limits."

Diverse Characters and Engaging Online Multiplayer

The trailer for The Duskbloods showcases a variety of characters, each with distinctive designs and personalities. Miyazaki confirmed that players will have over a dozen characters to choose from, with customization options available. He expressed, "The unique elements in character designs and weaponry offer players a chance to find their favorites."

Players begin their journey at a "hub" where they select and customize their character before entering the online multiplayer mode, which supports up to 8 players. After each match, players return to the hub to claim rewards, primarily character customization items.

Matches typically conclude with a last-player-standing scenario, though victory conditions can vary. Players may need to defeat formidable bosses or engage in other unique challenges.

Miyazaki highlighted, "Whether it's PvP or PvE, our goal is to provide an experience that encourages learning and skill development. PvE boss encounters are designed to be challenging, rewarding players with a sense of achievement upon victory."

He also introduced the concept of "roles" within the game, where players assume specific responsibilities and objectives. While details are still being finalized, examples include the "Destined Rivals" role, where players must locate and defeat their rival, and the "Destined Companion" role, which involves forming a bond with a partner for special rewards.

Miyazaki explained, "Roles can be assigned through blood customization, enhancing the role-playing aspect and adding dramatic depth to player interactions."
