Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in the layoff of an undisclosed number of employees involved in the project. This information was initially reported by Insider Gaming, referencing a LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, who mentioned joining the job search after the project's cancellation.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this project, described as a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). It was developed by a team previously working on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs remains unknown, sources have described it as "small." Additionally, at least one team member has confirmed on LinkedIn that their departure from the project was voluntary.
This move is part of a broader trend of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023 with significant job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters. The trend continued nearly a year ago when EA announced the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS. As a result of these cuts, approximately two dozen Respawn employees were affected. Since then, BioWare has undergone further restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and additional layoffs occurring.
IGN has sought comment from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
