Xbox Fans to Expect More Movie and TV Adaptations, Says Phil Spencer

Author : Hunter Update:Apr 20,2025

Despite the disappointing reception of the TV adaptation of *Halo*, Microsoft remains undeterred in its pursuit of bringing more of its iconic video games to the screen. This determination was expressed by Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, who indicated that fans can anticipate additional adaptations in the future.

Spencer's comments came during an interview with Variety, just before the release of *A Minecraft Movie*, a highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved Microsoft-owned sandbox game *Minecraft*, starring Jack Black. With high expectations, a successful performance could pave the way for sequels.

The *Minecraft* movie is the latest in a series of adaptations from Microsoft's gaming portfolio, following the critically acclaimed *Fallout* series on Prime Video, which is already set for a second season. However, the *Halo* TV series, based on Microsoft's flagship Xbox game, did not fare as well, leading to its cancellation after two seasons that were met with criticism.

Reflecting on the experience with *Halo*, Spencer told Variety that Microsoft is learning from its past projects and gaining more confidence in the realm of adaptations. "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," Spencer stated. He emphasized that each project builds on the last, acknowledging that there will be successes and failures but assuring the Xbox community of continued efforts in this space.

With this in mind, speculation abounds about which Xbox game might be adapted next. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for a live-action film and an animated TV series based on *Gears of War*, though updates have been sparse, with only occasional mentions from MCU star Dave Bautista about his interest in portraying Marcus Fenix.

Upcoming New Video Game Movies and TV Shows: 2025 Release Dates and Beyond

Considering the success of *Fallout*, could Prime Video be interested in adapting *The Elder Scrolls* or *Skyrim* into a new series? While Amazon has already ventured into fantasy with *The Rings of Power* and *The Wheel of Time*, the possibility remains intriguing.

Sony's *Gran Turismo* movie defied expectations with its success, prompting the question of whether Microsoft might consider a *Forza Horizon* film. Owning Activision Blizzard opens up further possibilities, such as a *Call of Duty* movie or a renewed attempt at adapting *Warcraft*. Jason Schreier's book, *Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment*, revealed that Netflix had been developing series based on *Warcraft*, *Overwatch*, and *Diablo*, projects that fell through but might be revisited with Microsoft's involvement.

On a lighter note, Microsoft's acquisition of the *Crash Bandicoot* franchise could lead to a family-friendly animated movie or TV series, following the successful model of *Mario* and *Sonic*. Additionally, with *Fable* set for a reboot in 2026, an adaptation seems like a natural fit.

And finally, could Microsoft take another shot at adapting *Halo*, perhaps this time as a high-budget movie?

Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are further along in their adaptation efforts. Sony has enjoyed success with the *Uncharted* movie, HBO's *The Last of Us*, and even *Twisted Metal*, which is set for a second season. Sony has also announced plans for a *Helldivers 2* movie, a film adaptation of *Horizon Zero Dawn*, and an anime adaptation of *Ghost of Tsushima*. The *God of War* TV show is already confirmed for two seasons.

Meanwhile, Nintendo boasts the most successful video game adaptation to date with *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, and a sequel is in development alongside a live-action *The Legend of Zelda* adaptation.
