Every film genre has its share of flops, but the video game movie genre seems to have more than its fair share. Iconic disasters like 1993's Super Mario Bros. and 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation are notorious for their poor quality and for failing to capture the essence of the original games. Thankfully, Hollywood has shown some improvement in recent years. The Sonic the Hedgehog series and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are shining examples of a better approach to these adaptations. However, not all recent attempts have been successful, with movies like Borderlands still falling short.
