A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a robust Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've chosen ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – presented without ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with a solid shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration is a worthwhile experience. A fun comparison piece, and arguably a more streamlined playthrough. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even appealing to those who typically avoid shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
While the Mega Man X series on home consoles faltered, its true successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an exceptional side-scrolling action series, albeit one with initial rough edges in its presentation. These imperfections are smoothed out in later installments, but the first game remains the ideal starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A Mega Man double-feature, justified by the distinct gameplay differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries show diminishing returns, this remains a highly enjoyable title.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
Another collection worthy of playing through entirely, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is so engaging that the grinding doesn't feel tedious. A unique setting and hidden secrets further enhance this fantastic title, making it a personal favorite among GBA third-party releases.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare catapulted the Half-Genie Hero into wider recognition. Its success ensured Shantae's continued presence across console generations. Interestingly, this title's origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon and might warrant inclusion on a future list.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, though not initially localized for that platform. Ace Attorney blends on-site investigations with dramatic courtroom sequences. The humor is lighthearted, yet the stories are compelling. The first game is exceptional, and while later installments are strong contenders, this remains a top choice for many.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick maintains the high writing quality but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save individuals while uncovering the mystery surrounding your own death. A captivating and highly recommended title that deserves more recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
Undeniably one of the best Nintendo DS games. The original DS version is ideal, as its design is intrinsically linked to the hardware's capabilities. However, the Switch port provides a viable alternative for those without access to a Nintendo DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection encompasses all Nintendo DS Castlevania titles. While all are worthwhile, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, playing all three DS games in this collection is highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives within the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch port is a commendable effort, offering a playable experience. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the most extensive. Despite its complexity, it's a rewarding experience.
