Higurashi and When They Cry creator Ryukishi07 has shared insights about crafting Silent Hill f, comparing the game's supernatural and psychological themes to "salad dressing."
While anticipation for Silent Hill f—the franchise's first mainline entry since 2012—has been building, writer Ryukishi07 remained relatively quiet until his appearance at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles. During a panel with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer Akira Yamaoka, he revealed taking a unique approach to the project, centering the narrative around a singular core theme.
As reported by Famitsu via Automaton, Ryukishi07 explained that players might initially struggle to separate the game's supernatural and psychological horror elements, as they appear intertwined. However, he teased that the truth would gradually emerge, likening this revelation to the separation of oil and vinegar in salad dressing.
Elaborating on this analogy, Ryukishi07 described how these elements would eventually distinguish themselves, much like ingredients in a dressing that separate after being mixed. While this comparison might seem unusual, he assured fans that, alongside uncovering the mysteries of Ebisugaoka, plenty of room would remain for interpretation—a hallmark of the Silent Hill experience.
The creator also emphasized that Silent Hill f isn't purely a horror story. Like previous entries, it will delve into human emotions such as love and sorrow.
Konami has confirmed Silent Hill f isn't connected to previous titles, offering instead a standalone narrative accessible to newcomers. Set in 1960s Japan, it follows teenager Hinako Shimizu, grappling with societal pressures. Notably, it's the first Silent Hill game to receive an 18+ rating in Japan.
Producer Okamoto highlighted the game's intensified combat, striking visual contrast between beauty and horror, and psychologically charged puzzle design. Silent Hill f launches September 25 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
