IGN Live exclusively unveiled the first five minutes of SYFY's anticipated adaptation Revival, along with an interview featuring co-creator/showrunner Aaron B. Koontz explaining why this fresh take on the undead deserves your attention.
Revival premieres June 12 on SYFY, adapting Tim Seeley and Mike Norton's Harvey Award-nominated comic series (2012-2017). Our exclusive preview (embedded below) introduces "Revival Day" – when the deceased inexplicably return, though notably not as traditional zombies.
"That opening scene hooked us instantly in the comics," Koontz revealed. "It perfectly establishes intrigue while foreshadowing deeper mysteries that unfold across the season. What appears straightforward initially reveals hidden layers."
One standout sequence features practical effects wizardry: An undead individual escapes cremation at Randy's Crematorium (Wausau, Wisconsin) while engulfed in flames – all achieved without CGI.
"We committed fully to practical effects," Koontz explained. "Coordinating with local emergency crews was surreal – I kept hoping nothing catastrophic happened elsewhere in town!"
The scene introduces Graeme Barrett (Divorced Dads) as Randy, discovered by Koontz via Instagram. "His eccentric energy contrasts perfectly with the Cypress family drama anchoring our story," Koontz noted.
Koontz describes the series as "Mare of Easttown meets Fargo" – blending small-town mystery with quirky characters and horror-thriller elements, while subverting zombie tropes.
The ensemble cast includes Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp), Romy Weltman (Backstage), wrestling legend CM Punk, and Steven Ogg (The Walking Dead).
Peacock will stream episodes weekly following SYFY broadcasts. For more exclusives, explore IGN Live's coverage of the Revival trailer launch and other highlights.
