After completing the main campaign and the Cruel difficulty Acts 1 through 3, players in Path of Exile 2 will unlock the Endgame and gain access to the Atlas of Worlds. Within this expansive Atlas map, adventurers will encounter various unique structures such as the Realmgate, Lost Towers, the Burning Monolith, and the highly sought-after Citadels. Citadels are particularly elusive, but with the 0.1.1 update, they'll become more visible from a distance. If you're struggling to locate them on your Atlas map, here are some tips to help you find more Citadels in PoE 2.
What Are Citadels For In PoE 2?
In Path of Exile 2, Citadels are a distinctive type of map node, available in three variants: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each Citadel hosts a unique Boss, which are revamped versions of bosses from the PoE 2 campaign, now powered up for the endgame challenge. Defeating these bosses rewards players with a Crisis Fragment, which serves as a key to unlock the Burning Monolith, the home of the Atlas pinnacle boss, the Arbiter of Ash. This step is crucial for completing the "Pinnacle of Flame" quest, which you unlock upon entering the Burning Monolith map and inspecting the locked door.
- Iron Citadel: Home to Count Geonor (Act 1 boss), recognizable as a large city with black walls.
- Copper Citadel: Features Jamanra, The Abomination (Act 2 boss), appearing as a large encampment circling the map node.
- Stone Citadel: Hosts Doryani (Act 3 boss), resembling a stone pyramid similar to the ziggurats in Act 3.
To access a Citadel, players must use a Waystone of at least Tier 15 to travel to its map node and activate it. Similar to other Maps, you have only one attempt to navigate through the map and defeat the boss without dying. These areas are not only essential for obtaining Crisis Fragments but also offer a chance at exceptional loot. Once completed, a Citadel cannot be re-run; you'll need to explore the Atlas further to find another.
How To Find More Citadels In PoE 2
With the 0.1.1 update, Path of Exile 2 makes Citadels more noticeable on the Atlas map by adding a large beacon of light above their location, visible even through the Fog of War. This update significantly aids in guiding players to Citadel locations more efficiently.
If you don't see any Citadels near your current position on the Atlas map, the best strategy to uncover more is to move in a straight line in one direction. This approach maximizes the area of Fog of War you reveal, thereby expanding your view of the Atlas map. Along your journey, make sure to visit any Lost Towers you encounter, as completing these will clear a large area of Fog around the tower, potentially revealing nearby Citadels.
Each type of Citadel tends to spawn in specific biomes:
- Iron Citadels are commonly found in Grass or Forest biomes.
- Copper Citadels typically appear in Desert biomes.
- Stone Citadels are often located along the coast of any biome.
If you're targeting a specific Citadel to access the Burning Monolith, navigate towards areas on your map that match the appropriate biome type.
Once you've located a Citadel, it's unlikely to find another one nearby, as multiple Citadels rarely spawn on the same screen of the Atlas map when fully zoomed out. To find additional Citadels after discovering one, head in a completely different direction from your previous path.
With the 0.1.1 update, you should be able to spot Citadel beacons within a few screens of your explored areas. If you still don't see any Citadels within the Fog of War after the update, continue following these tips: move in a straight line in one direction, and you'll eventually spot a beacon guiding you to your next challenge.
