Announced at Minecraft Live, a significant graphical overhaul named "Vibrant Visuals" is coming to Minecraft.
This update will first launch for compatible Minecraft: Bedrock Edition devices, with plans to extend to Minecraft: Java Edition later. It introduces enhanced visuals, including directional lighting, volumetric fog, pixelated shadows, and sparkling water effects. Focused solely on aesthetics, Vibrant Visuals does not alter gameplay mechanics, such as light levels affecting hostile mob spawns.

Players can easily switch between the new visuals and the classic Minecraft look with a single button, preserving the traditional style for those who prefer it.
“The initial release is set for beta platforms in a few months,” said Agnes Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director.
“We’re conducting extensive testing to ensure compatibility across platforms while maintaining high quality and performance. This marks the beginning of an exciting journey.”
Maddie Psenka, senior product manager for Vibrant Visuals, elaborated on the update’s development:
“This has been a long-term goal for us. Previous graphics projects laid the groundwork, but this time we focused on building a robust foundation for cross-platform compatibility. We prioritized community feedback to deliver the visual enhancements players have been requesting.”
“We didn’t just aim for stunning visuals on PC,” Psenka added. “Our goal was to ensure performance on mobile and consoles, navigating the complexities of various platforms to create something we’re truly proud of.”
This update kicks off a new era for Minecraft’s visuals, with Mojang aiming to blend the game’s iconic aesthetic with a modern look over the coming years.
“As Minecraft evolves, we’ll continue to enhance its graphics,” said Jasper Boerstra, Minecraft’s art director.
“With ongoing development and player feedback, we’re committed to introducing new features over time. Minecraft remains as relevant as ever.”
Vibrant Visuals will be a free update, reflecting Mojang’s commitment to enhancing Minecraft without heavy monetization. The studio also reiterated its stance against creating a “Minecraft 2” or relying on generative AI, staying true to the game’s roots despite its 15-year legacy.
