Author : Gabriel Update:May 18,2025

The eagerly anticipated LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart, now available for preorder, is a set that captivates builders of all levels. Casual enthusiasts will be drawn to its vibrant primary colors and the set's large, easy-to-assemble pieces, making it an instant hit. Meanwhile, seasoned LEGO aficionados will revel in the intricate construction of the Kart and the meticulous detail where every decorative element is printed directly on the bricks, eliminating the need for stickers.

Out May 15### LEGO Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart

Priced at $169.99, available exclusively at the LEGO Store, the LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart set marks the beginning of a new subgenre under the expansive LEGO Mario umbrella. This development sparks hope for more detailed Kart sets featuring other iconic characters like Luigi in a Sports Coupe or Princess Peach on a Cat Cruiser, especially given the existence of smaller playset-scaled Kart sets available at Amazon.

The set, divided across 17 bags, offers two distinct building experiences. First, you assemble the Standard Kart, starting with a LEGO Technic mesh for the floorboard, reinforced by bricks and secured with pins. The body shell follows, with components like rockets/exhaust pipes, side panels, and a unique steering mechanism attached via rods and clamps. This steering system, ingeniously designed, connects to the front of the Kart and mimics a folding storm door, allowing the front wheels to turn when you manipulate the steering wheel.

Despite its seemingly straightforward appearance, the Kart's assembly is a testament to detailed craftsmanship, requiring numerous small steps that culminate in a visually sophisticated model that still embraces its playful essence.

Following the Kart, you build Mario, utilizing a construction method reminiscent of The Mighty Bowser set from three years ago. The process begins with the torso, followed by legs, arms, and finally, the head and hat. The hat, notably, is the most complex element, with two smaller builds that give it its iconic bent shape.

Building Mario offers a chance to appreciate the finer details, such as the hair peeking from under his hat, the markings on his gloves, and the rolled-up cuffs of his jeans. Much like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle of a famous painting, assembling Mario with LEGO bricks allows you to notice subtle elements that contribute to the character's overall charm.

Regrettably, Mario cannot be detached from the Kart. His torso is anchored to a gray plate that connects to the Kart's seat, a design choice that, while understandable for maintaining set integrity, might frustrate fans hoping for a standalone Mario figure. This limitation could inspire creative DIY modifications among LEGO enthusiasts.

The completed model is visually stunning and mounts on a buildable stand that can be tilted and rotated, offering versatile display options. You can position the Kart on an incline, a decline, or in the midst of a turn, and pose Mario as if he's celebrating a successful lap.

LEGO's direction towards larger, more detailed Mario-themed sets is promising, following the success of The Mighty Bowser and The Piranha Plant. The LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart, set number 72037, composed of 1972 pieces, upholds this high standard, combining excellent build quality with eye-catching presentation.

Set for an exclusive launch at the LEGO Store on May 15, the LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart is priced at $169.99. Don't miss your chance to preorder now and join the excitement surrounding this remarkable addition to the LEGO Mario collection.
