The story of "The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel: Northern War" begins in the Northumbria Autonomous Province, located in the northwestern part of the Zemuria continent. It unfolds between the events of the original "The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II" and "The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III," telling "The Northern Campaign" from the perspective of Lavie, a female hunter who belongs to the TV anime's "Northern Jaegers."

Year 1205 of the Seventh Calendar.

Lavie is a girl born and raised in the Northumbria Autonomous Province in the northwestern part of the Zemuria continent.

To protect her homeland and prove herself different from her grandfather, Vlad—a man once hailed as a hero who ultimately betrayed his home—she volunteers for the "Northern Jaegers," the continent's largest hunter corps, and carries out her duties with unwavering resolve.

One day, Lavie, whose dedication to her duties often leads to disciplinary issues, is forced to team up with fellow Jaeger Corps members Marty, Iselia, and Talion. They are ordered on a dangerous spy mission into the Erebonia Empire.

Their objective is to gather intelligence on the "Hero of the Empire," a mysterious figure who poses a threat to Northumbria.
