Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, shared his thoughts on Johnny Cage's integration into the film's storyline with Entertainment Weekly. "His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores," Boon remarked. He described Cage as a "washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing," adding that Urban brings a fresh take to the character, blending novelty with his unique flair.
Director Simon McQuoid emphasized the balance they sought with Johnny Cage's character, aiming to avoid making him "completely silly, comic book." He credited Urban's casting with adding depth to the role, preventing it from becoming too light or throwaway.
Entertainment Weekly also confirmed that movie-accurate skins for Urban's Johnny Cage, Rudolph's Kitana, and Ford's Shao Kahn will be available in *Mortal Kombat 1* later this year, exciting fans who enjoy the game's integration with the film.
Adding to the cast, Damon Herriman plays the sinister Quan Chi, while Josh Lawson and Max Huang reprise their roles as Kano and Kung Lao, respectively. Despite their demise in the first movie, Boon explained how the lore of the *Mortal Kombat* games allows for the return of dead characters, referencing the use of spirits and the NetherRealm.
Completing the new additions, Tati Gabrielle will portray Jade, and Ana Thu Nguyen will take on the role of Queen Sindel. *Mortal Kombat 2* is slated to hit theaters on October 24, 2025, promising fans an action-packed continuation of the saga.
