Perhaps it was unavoidable after all: Rockstar has officially delayed GTA 6 until May 2026. The announcement arrived via a brief statement that offered no details on launch platforms, no new trailer, and not even a fresh screenshot.
Longtime Rockstar fans have seen this before. The studio has a reputation for postponing its releases, so this delay for GTA 6 isn’t entirely surprising. Still, the reaction across the community has been a mix of disappointment, cautious relief, and the collective realization that the internet is bracing for another year of intense—and often wild—speculation about GTA 6.
The GTA 6 subreddit—already a breeding ground for numerous fan theories about the game’s trailers and launch timing—erupted following the news.
“Ffs, Fuck Rockstar, at least give us screenshots,” posted MyNameIsToFuOG, expressing the general frustration that Rockstar announced the delay without offering any new look at the game.
“At least give us a screenshot, this is ridiculous even for R*,” echoed Abvk0. “After a year and a half of silence, all we get is a delay notice with absolutely nothing new to show for it?”
“At least we have a date now. I don’t mind a delay if it means the final game will be better,” reflected a more philosophical user, bl00nded.
“It’s Rockstar, bro. What did you expect? I’m skeptical it will even hit that May 2026 date—I bet they delay it again,” commented a concerned Puzzleheaded-Hunt731.
The extended timeline has also fueled hope that GTA 6 might launch simultaneously on PC and consoles—PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S—in 2026. “I hope that means a PC version is also coming in 2026 and not 2027,” wrote Kiwibom.
“My prediction: console release in 2026, PC in late 2027, and a next-gen console version by 2028,” forecasted Velkoadmiral.
IGN's own commenters weighed in heavily on the GTA 6 delay as well. User BSideleau didn't hold back, criticizing the current console generation with a sharply worded post:
“No one’s surprised. This will be the last big release of what has been a lukewarm console cycle. This generation feels more like a minor update than true next-gen hardware—yet both Microsoft and Sony raised the prices. We should demand better value and performance.”
Another popular topic is the potential price of GTA 6. With Nintendo and Microsoft already pricing select titles at $80, many fans are bracing for GTA 6 to hit that mark—or possibly even higher if it includes a new version of GTA Online.
In its statement, Rockstar noted, “we look forward to sharing more information with you soon.” Does that mean the second trailer is just around the corner? Fans are certainly crossing their fingers.
GTA 6 isn’t just poised to become the biggest entertainment launch in history—it’s also expected by many to be one of the best games ever made. With that kind of pressure, Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two are taking every precaution to ensure the final product meets sky-high expectations. Under those circumstances, a delay feels almost inevitable.
