Baldur’s Gate 3 experienced a notable player surge on Steam after the highly anticipated Patch 8 dropped, positioning developer Larian perfectly to shift focus toward its next major project.
The game-changing Patch 8 arrived last week, introducing 12 fresh subclasses alongside a brand-new photo mode—prompting fans to dive back in. Over the weekend, Baldur’s Gate 3 reached an impressive peak of 169,267 concurrent Steam players—a rare achievement for a single-player RPG in its second year. PlayStation and Xbox player counts remain undisclosed by Sony and Microsoft.
Discussing Patch 8’s impact, Larian’s Swen Vincke tweeted that Baldur’s Gate 3 will likely maintain strong momentum thanks to robust mod support—not just the update’s initial player spike. This stability allows the studio to pour energy into their next ambitious title. "We’ve got big shoes to fill," Vincke acknowledged.
"Today feels validating," he added. "Patch 8 reignited player engagement, which demanded massive effort but was worth it. With mods flourishing, the game’s longevity looks promising, freeing us to polish our next project meticulously."
As Larian confirmed, Patch 8 marks the final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3, capping off a historic run. Since its 2023 debut, the RPG garnered critical praise and commercial triumph, sustaining strong sales through 2024 and into 2025.
The studio surprised fans by announcing its departure from Baldur’s Gate and Dungeons & Dragons to pursue an original title, later enforcing a media blackout to concentrate on the mystery project.
Hasbro, D&D’s owner, hinted at continuing the franchise post-Larian. During GDC, SVP Dan Ayoub told IGN that with Larian exiting, Hasbro fields significant interest in Baldur’s Gate. "We’re finalizing plans and will share updates soon," he said.
Ayoub remained coy about whether these plans involve Baldur’s Gate 4 or crossovers like Magic: The Gathering tie-ins. While he personally wants BG4, he acknowledged development would take time: "We’ll proceed thoughtfully—no rush. Expect teasers shortly."
