The composer for HBO's critically acclaimed series The Last of Us has confirmed that "at least two more seasons" are planned, strongly indicating a Season 4 is in development.
"There will be at least two more seasons, without a doubt," Jake Staley stated during an interview on The Last of Us: Savage Starlight podcast. "At a minimum. That's all I can say for now."
This news is not entirely unexpected. Last month, showrunner Craig Mazin hinted that a fourth season would be almost necessary for the series, explaining that wrapping up the story from Naughty Dog's two video games in Season 3 alone "would take forever." While there's a "good chance" Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, Mazin concluded that "completing this narrative in a third season is impossible."
HBO has praised the performance of The Last of Us Season 2, noting a surge in viewership has grown the show's global audience to over 90 million since Season 1 concluded. The network attributed lower ratings for the Season 2 finale to the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Mazin and Neil Druckmann recently shared another insight: they are still determining "how much, or how little," certain fan-favorite characters will appear in future seasons.
The creative team visited IGN Live recently to analyze key moments in adapting the game for television and discuss the process behind creating major scenes like Joel's death, the horde attack, and the planetarium sequence.
