Megalopolis Transforms From Divisive Film to Graphic Novel
Few films sparked as much debate in 2024 as Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis. This visually stunning yet polarizing epic became instant watercooler material after its Cannes premiere, generating equal parts admiration and bewildered reactions throughout the year. Now fans will experience Coppola's vision through fresh eyes with an upcoming graphic novel adaptation.
Titled Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis: An Original Graphic Novel, the reinterpretation hits shelves this October courtesy of Abrams ComicArts. The project brings together an impressive creative team – writer Chris Ryall (known for adapting works by Stephen King and Clive Barker) and artist Jacob Phillips (Newburn, That Texas Blood).
Coppola's Vision Takes Flight in New Medium
"I wanted the graphic novel to spread its own wings," Coppola explained about giving Ryall creative freedom. "Rather than being bound by the film's exact blueprint, I hoped it would become more of a creative sibling than a carbon copy."
The legendary director praised the finished product, noting: "This collaboration proves art can't be contained – it evolves into parallel expressions. That's the true gift we can offer audiences."
The Megalopolis Saga Continues
The story follows visionary architect Cesar Catalina (Adam Driver), whose utopian dreams collide with New Rome's political realities embodied by Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito). This modern Roman fable explores ambition, power and humanity's eternal struggle between progress and tradition.
While currently unavailable on streaming platforms, the original film can still be purchased digitally. Meanwhile, anticipation builds for this bold graphic novel iteration of Coppola's most personal project in decades.
