Phom, also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho, is a beloved card game deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture, especially popular in the northern regions. Known as Ta La in the south and Phom in the north, this game captivates players with its strategic depth and social engagement. When playing Phom, the objective is to gather and discard cards to form sets, known as Phoms, while minimizing the score of cards not included in these sets. The game's use of a traditional 52-card deck and its varied playing styles enhance its appeal. Terms in Phom, Ta La

• Phom: A set of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order, or three cards of the same value.
• Junk cards: Cards that do not form part of any Phom.
• Ù: Achieved when a player forms three Phoms, resulting in no junk cards, and is considered the ultimate victory.
• Stomach: The remaining cards after all players have been dealt their initial hands.
• Mom: Occurs when a player ends the game without completing any Phom.
• Take the pin: When a player discards a junk card on their last turn, which another player then takes.
• Send: In the final turn, if a player's junk card can be added to another player's Phom, it can be sent and will not count towards the final score.
• Compensation: If a player takes another's pin in the last turn, and someone else subsequently Ùs, the player who took the pin receives compensation. The next player to take a pin must compensate the previous pin-taker. Additionally, forming three consecutive cards also counts as compensation.
• Re: After a player discards, if another player takes that card, the original player gets an additional turn.

How to Play Phom - Ta La

• Number of Players: The game can be played with a minimum of two players and a maximum of four. Each player receives nine cards, while the dealer or previous winner gets ten. The remaining cards, known as the Stomach, are placed face-down in the center.

• Gameplay: The round proceeds counterclockwise, starting with the player who has ten cards.

  • The first player discards any card. The next player can take this card if it helps form a Phom or draw from the Stomach if it doesn't.
  • After drawing or taking a card, the player discards one card, and the next player follows suit.
  • This continues until a player Ùs or the game ends after four rounds.

• End of Game: The game concludes when a player Ùs. If no one Ùs, the game ends after four rounds, and the scores of junk cards determine the winner.

• Final Turn: Players must play all their Phoms, send cards that can be added to others' Phoms, and discard their last card. Remaining junk cards are scored.

Scoring for Junk Cards When No One Ùs

• The player with the lowest score wins.
• Cards A, J, Q, K are scored as 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively, while other cards are scored according to their numerical value.
• In case of a tie, the player who discards first wins.

Final Score Calculation

• First place: +6 points
• Second place: -1 point
• Third place: -2 points
• Last place: -3 points
• Pin taker: -4 points
• Pin giver: +4 points
• Ù or Khan Ù: +15 points (each other player loses 5 points)
• Burned player: Loses 4 points to the winner
