Ubisoft has unveiled a new gameplay deep dive for Assassin's Creed: Shadows, highlighting the intricate equipment and progression systems for protagonists Yasuke and Naoe. One of the most exciting revelations involves an upgraded version of the franchise's signature Hidden Blade mechanic.
Dual Character Progression System
The game introduces specialized skill trees reflecting each character's unique combat approach - Yasuke mastering traditional samurai disciplines while Naoe hones stealth-focused shinobi techniques. Players allocate earned skill points to unlock weapon-specific abilities or refine fighting techniques. Mastery points become available by completing open-world activities or besting formidable opponents like Daisyo warriors.
Ubisoft has implemented an automatic balancing system to maintain equal character progression throughout the campaign. Certain elite abilities require players to complete narrative-specific objectives, such as infiltrating a secret shinobi faction. Other upgrades tie into the "Knowledge" progression track - advancing this system involves studying ancient texts or meditating at shrines, with the sixth Knowledge rank unlocking an entirely new skill branch.
Enhanced Equipment Mechanics
The developer also detailed the comprehensive gear system featuring five quality classifications: common, uncommon, rare, epic, and legendary. All equipment can be enhanced at blacksmiths and receives visual customization options. More importantly, certain armor and weapon bonuses may fundamentally change combat strategies.
The returning Hidden Blade remains the ultimate assassination tool, maintaining its signature one-hit kill capability against most enemies. Assassin's Creed: Shadows launches worldwide on March 20 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 platforms.
