- Trials of Mana now features controller support and achievements, among other new additions
- Players can use their preferred gamepad with the Apple Arcade and iOS versions
- Android support has not been confirmed yet, but may arrive in the near future
While Square Enix continues to make significant moves in mobile gaming, particularly with the highly successful Final Fantasy 7 spin-offs, the company has maintained a presence in this space for some time. A prime example is Trials of Mana, the 3D action RPG that has finally received a much-anticipated update. This update brings controller support and achievements to both the standard and Apple Arcade versions of the game.
The timing of this update is quite fitting, especially with the recent release of Visions of Mana last year (which is also collaborating with Last Cloudia). However, the enthusiastic response from the community highlights a longstanding concern. I suspect many players share the view that 3D controls in most mobile games can be somewhat awkward, at best, and this has likely discouraged some from diving into the experience.
This is particularly unfortunate because the Mana series from Square Enix has long been a favorite among discerning JRPG fans looking for an alternative after numerous playthroughs of Final Fantasy. While the touchscreen controls are perfectly adequate for many, they remain a significant barrier for a portion of the audience.
Taking ControlUltimately, if this new update encourages more players to finally try Trials of Mana, that's a positive outcome. The game remains available in both its standard and enhanced versions, though it appears the Android platform has not yet received the same update. With its vibrant visuals and classic gameplay, those who have been hesitant to play Trials of Mana can now likely jump in and fully enjoy the experience thanks to this latest enhancement.
