Back in February, I asked Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick about his confidence in hitting GTA 6's originally planned Fall 2025 release window. He responded with strong optimism. Fast forward three months, and GTA 6 has been delayed to May 26, 2026 - a development few found surprising.
The Reasoning Behind the Delay
When I recently questioned Zelnick about what changed during those months, he explained that as development progressed toward completion, the need for additional polish became evident.
"As we get closer to finalizing a title striving for perfection, the requirements for continued refinement become clearer," Zelnick stated. "In this instance, we identified an opportunity where a relatively small amount of extra time would allow Rockstar Games to fully realize their creative vision without compromise. Naturally, I fully endorsed this approach."
Financial Impact and Future Pipeline
While pushing GTA 6 into the next fiscal year affects Take-Two's short-term financial outlook, Zelnick remains bullish about their upcoming slate. This includes Borderlands 4 from Gearbox, Mafia: The Old Country from Hangar 13, plus new installments in their NBA 2K and WWE 2K franchises.
"Looking at Fiscal 2026 from our current vantage point, I'm very optimistic," he said. "Of course, delays are never pleasant, but supporting our teams in their pursuit of excellence remains our top priority."
Will GTA 6 Meet Its New Deadline?
When asked point-blank about confidence in the May 2026 release date, Zelnick expressed even greater certainty this time:
"Historically, when we commit to a specific date, we've consistently proven our ability to meet it."
This statement strongly suggests the date is firm, though absolute guarantees in game development remain rare. Given GTA 6 now has a concrete launch window, any further delay would indeed be surprising.
