"New Star Wars Novel Explores Post-Skywalker Universe"

Author : Natalie Update:May 18,2025

We're excited to dive into the Star Wars universe beyond The Rise of Skywalker, and while Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter remains a highly anticipated project, fans can soon explore this new era through a different medium. A new young adult novel titled Star Wars: The Last Order is set to hit shelves, offering a fresh narrative following the events of the 2019 film.

Revealed through publisher Penguin Random House’s website, Star Wars: The Last Order will focus on John Boyega's beloved character Finn and Naomi Ackie's resistance ally Jannah, both introduced in The Rise of Skywalker. The novel, penned by Kwame Mbalia, promises an engaging story as described in the official synopsis:

“Following the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime.”

PlayThis novel marks the first Star Wars project to delve into the post-*Rise of Skywalker* universe, setting the stage for future explorations. Meanwhile, Shawn Levy's film remains on the horizon, with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy outlining its place in the timeline. In a February interview with Deadline, Kennedy stated, "It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone *Star Wars* story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." Jonathan Tropper, the writer on the project, recently expressed his enthusiasm to Screen Rant, saying, "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." The film's release date was announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan, with Ryan Gosling confirmed to star, set for May 28, 2027.
