Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus strategy, set to take effect from January 2026. The company will no longer include PlayStation 4 games in its PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog, choosing instead to focus exclusively on PlayStation 5 titles. This change aims to cater to the growing number of PS5 players and reflects Sony's strategic pivot towards its newer console.
The announcement was made alongside the reveal of February 2025's monthly titles on the PlayStation Blog. Sony emphasized that this shift will not impact the PS4 games that subscribers have already claimed. However, any PS4 games currently in the Games Catalog will remain accessible until they are rotated out of the catalog during the regular monthly refresh.
Sony also reiterated its commitment to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience. "We’ll continue to evolve the experience of PlayStation Plus and optimize the benefits you receive, including exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, online game save storage, and more," the company stated. Looking ahead, Sony is excited about adding new PS5 titles to the service each month to enrich the gaming experience for its subscribers.

Since its launch in 2013, the PlayStation 4 has been a cornerstone of gaming for over a decade, with the PlayStation 5 following in 2020. Sony noted that "many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles," which underpins this new direction for PlayStation Plus.
It remains uncertain whether Sony will reassign PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from earlier PlayStation generations. Further details on this are expected to be shared closer to the implementation date in January 2026.
