The creators of the controversial Grand Theft Auto 6 parody, Grand Taking Ages, have successfully launched the game on Steam after its removal from the PlayStation Store. Initially released on PlayStation with AI-generated assets and a May 2025 release date, Sony swiftly pulled the title.
Grand Taking Ages, a management simulator where players run a game development studio, satirizes the long-awaited release of Rockstar's GTA 6. The game's initial PlayStation Store listing featured artwork reminiscent of Rockstar's style, alongside a list of humorous, unrealistic gameplay features.
Following Sony's takedown, the developers, Violarte, made significant changes to secure Steam approval. These included removing "VI" from the title, redesigning the logo, and revising descriptions to better distinguish the game from GTA 6. While the updated artwork still bears a resemblance to Rockstar's style, it's less directly derivative.
Despite the changes, the game still utilizes AI-generated voiceovers, a fact disclosed on the Steam page in accordance with Valve's AI guidelines. The new Steam description reads:
Coming Soon Since Forever! Start your game dev journey in mom's garage! Battle angry fans, dodge ruthless journalists, and perfect the art of "creative" deadlines. Survive on pizza and energy drinks while building your dream studio into... a slightly better garage!
Violarte adopted a proactive approach with Valve, engaging with their team before submission to ensure compliance with their policies. They cite similar parody projects, such as Grand Theft Hamlet, as precedent for protecting such games from takedowns.
Violarte has now requested reinstatement on the PlayStation Store, highlighting the Steam approval as evidence of the game's updated compliance. The contrasting experiences with Sony and Valve highlight the differing approaches to content curation between platforms. While Steam's more open policy is well-known, Sony's stricter approach has raised questions about its curation process.
Rockstar's GTA 6 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in Fall 2025.
