Sony has announced the creation of a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, which originated from Bungie, the developers behind Destiny and Marathon. This new studio is currently working on its debut game, an ambitious project that has garnered excitement from Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group.
The name teamLFG, standing for 'Looking For Group,' reflects the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game that takes inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and even "frog-type games." Set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game aims to foster a sense of friendship, community, and belonging among players.
teamLFG emphasizes creating immersive multiplayer environments that players can engage with for countless hours, learning, playing, and mastering the game. The studio plans to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests, remaining agile to incorporate player feedback both before and after the game's launch, as part of its ongoing live service.
This incubation project was spun out of Bungie amidst significant layoffs in 2023 and 2024, following Sony's acquisition and Bungie's struggle to meet financial targets with Destiny 2. The layoffs affected approximately 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another 220 in 2024, with 155 employees being integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Recent developments at Bungie include the full reveal of the extraction shooter Marathon and a roadmap for the future of Destiny 2. However, Bungie has no plans for Destiny 3 and has canceled a Destiny spinoff called Payback. A former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing through improvements to Destiny 2, suggesting a positive influence from the parent company.
