Steady Progress on The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, Says Obsidian Entertainment CEO
Obsidian Entertainment Confident About Upcoming New Titles
The development of The Outer Worlds 2, the eagerly awaited sequel to the popular space action RPG, is proceeding smoothly, according to Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart. While much of the studio's attention is currently directed towards Avowed, Urquhart reassures fans that The Outer Worlds 2 is "going really well."
In a recent interview with Limit Break Network on YouTube, Urquhart expressed his admiration for the team working on The Outer Worlds 2. "I’m impressed with the team," he stated. "We have a lot of people on that game that get it—who have worked on the first one and have been with us for a long time. So I’ve actually been really impressed by it."
Urquhart also candidly discussed the challenges Obsidian faced, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and following their acquisition by Microsoft. At one point, the studio was juggling multiple projects, including Grounded and Pentiment, which strained resources. "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half," Urquhart admitted. There were even discussions about halting work on The Outer Worlds 2 to focus on Avowed. However, the studio chose to continue with their original plans and develop all games concurrently.
"We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment," the CEO recounted.
Reflecting on the decision to persevere, Urquhart praised the outcomes of Grounded and Pentiment, calling them "awesome." He also expressed optimism about Avowed, stating it is "looking great," and The Outer Worlds 2 is "looking incredible." While specific details about the game content remain under wraps, the delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential adjustments to the timelines of other Obsidian projects.
The Outer Worlds 2 was announced in 2021, but updates have been scarce since then. Urquhart acknowledged the possibility of a launch delay, similar to what occurred with Avowed. Nonetheless, the CEO emphasized the studio's commitment to delivering exceptional games. "We will get there with all these games," he affirmed. "Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there, and I think that’s been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are expected to be available on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
