Nintendo Weighs Switch 2 Price Based on Consumer Expectations

Author : Joshua Update:Feb 19,2025

Nintendo is carefully considering several factors to determine the price of the upcoming Switch 2. While analysts predict a $400 price point, Nintendo remains tight-lipped, citing inflation, fluctuating exchange rates, and consumer expectations as key considerations. This contrasts with the original Switch's $299.99 launch price, a price point maintained for several years.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged the significant economic shifts since the original Switch's 2017 release, stating that a multifaceted approach is necessary for pricing the Switch 2. He emphasized the need to consider consumer expectations for Nintendo products alongside current economic realities.

The pricing strategy is further complicated by competitor pricing. Sony and Microsoft have recently increased prices for their current-gen consoles due to rising costs and inflation. A $400 price for the Switch 2, while a significant increase from the original Switch's launch price, seems plausible given analysts' predictions and the anticipated improvements in power and features. The Switch OLED model currently sits at $350, and the Switch Lite at $200, providing a range of existing price points.

A dedicated Switch 2 Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, promising a more detailed look at the console. The initial reveal showcased the console's design, hinted at Mario Kart 9, and teased a possible "mouse" mode for the new Joy-Cons. However, many questions remain, including the functionality of a new Joy-Con button, the console's processing power, and the purpose of its new ports. Hands-on events are also planned in various global locations.

Furukawa confirmed that the original Switch's price will remain unchanged despite the Switch 2's launch.
