Encountering the ferocious beasts in *Monster Hunter Wilds* is one of the game's most thrilling aspects, and Rompopolo stands out among them as a truly unique challenge. As a Brute Wyvern, Rompopolo first makes its appearance during Chapter 2, Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields, when venturing toward Azuz City in the Oilwell Basin. Defeating it is essential to progress, but once you’ve taken it down at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. From then on, you can hunt it repeatedly by exploring the Oilwell Basin or taking on the “Oilwell Basin Blast” Optional Quest.

How to Beat and Capture Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
Before diving into the fight, it’s crucial to equip your hunter with gear that complements Rompopolo’s elemental weaknesses. Opt for water-element weapons, which can be obtained earlier in the game from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, prioritize fire-resistant armor; early on, you might only find belts and greaves from Uth Duna, but later in the chapter, Ajarakan offers better options. Crafting a fire-resistance Talisman, such as the Fire Charm I or a general Defense Charm I, is another smart move. Don’t forget to prepare a hearty meal to boost your health and stamina before heading into battle.
Rompopolo’s Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo’s unique physiology grants it a set of explosive gas-based attacks, making it a formidable opponent. Its saggy skin stores gas, which fuels its arsenal of gas-related abilities, including potent explosions. Be prepared for poison-based attacks as well—carry Antidotes to counteract these status effects. Your Palico can assist by cleansing ailments, though its success varies.
Here are Rompopolo’s primary attacks to watch out for:
Arm Swipe: Rompopolo swipes its clawed arms twice in quick succession. This attack is relatively easy to dodge due to its limited range.
Lunge With Arm Swipe: The beast charges forward while raising its arms for an arcing swipe, making this a more dangerous maneuver to avoid.
Tail Swing: Rompopolo swings its tail toward its target, another straightforward but powerful physical attack.
Poison Stream or Swipe: Sprays a toxic gas stream or charges forward while swinging its head, spreading poison.
Oil Explosion: When distant, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing explosions beneath your feet. Dodge swiftly!
Charged Oil Explosion: Later in the fight, Rompopolo curls its tail and pumps more gas into the oil, creating a larger explosion. Stay clear to avoid heavy damage.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

In Monster Hunter Wilds, you have the choice to either kill or capture Rompopolo. To capture it, reduce its health until your Palico comments that it looks “tired” (almost defeated). Deploy Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to immobilize it, then use at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out. Once captured, the hunt ends.
Both methods yield rewards, though the item drops vary slightly depending on whether you kill or capture the monster. Low-rank and high-rank rewards include resources such as Rampopolo Hide, Rampopolo Claw, Rampopolo Beak, Spotted Poison Hide, Poison Sac, Rampopolo Certificate, and even rare items like Wyvern Gems.
