Rey Dau, the first dragon monster you'll meet in *Monster Hunter Wilds*, is known to inhabit the Windward Plains. This lightning-element dragon has breakable parts such as its horns, wings, and tail, and is particularly vulnerable to ice and water attacks. Here's a breakdown of its weaknesses and effective strategies:
- Known Habitats: Windward Plains
- Breakable Parts: Horns, Wings, Tail
- Recommended Elemental Attack: Ice and Water
- Effective Status Effects: Poison (2x), Sleep (2x), Paralysis (1x), Blastblight (2x), Stun (1x), Exhaust (2x)
- Effective Items: Pitfall Trap, Flash Pod, Dung Pod
The best spots to target are the head (4-star weakness) and the wings (3-star weakness). Avoid the torso as it's highly durable. If the head is hard to reach, aim for the tail instead. The legs are well-protected, so they’re not ideal targets. Use status ailments like Poison, Sleep, Blastblight, and Exhaust, but avoid Stun and Paralysis since Rey Dau is immune to lightning-based effects.
Use a Flash Pod
A Flash Pod is an excellent tool to temporarily stun Rey Dau, allowing you to land precise hits. When the dragon initiates its lightning attack, quickly aim for its horns, which will glow bright red in Focus Mode, to deal significant damage.
Wear Element-Resistant Gear
Surviving the fight becomes easier with the right gear. The Hope Armor set, with its Divine Blessing skill, reduces damage and provides resistance against Lightning and Fire. Additionally, consuming meals that boost elemental resistance can be beneficial. If dodging is challenging, position yourself near Rey Dau’s legs to minimize the risk of getting hit, as it primarily attacks in front and behind.
Pay Attention to the Environment
Rey Dau’s mobility means it will fly across different areas during the fight. In the open plains, use Vine Traps from the lone tree to stun the monster briefly. Be cautious when it returns to its nest, where it unleashes a follow-up lightning attack that can stun you. Stay vigilant to avoid this deadly move.

How to Capture Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds

Capturing Rey Dau offers another way to earn rewards in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. To capture it, weaken the dragon until its health is critically low, indicated by a skull icon near its icon on the mini-map. Use a Pitfall Trap since Shock Traps won’t work on this lightning dragon. Follow up with a Tranquilizer swiftly to prevent the dragon from escaping.
