Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Cracks Down on Mods
The Season 1 update for Marvel Rivals has reportedly disabled the use of custom-made mods, a popular pastime among players since the game's launch. While not explicitly announced, players discovered this change upon logging in, finding their custom character skins replaced with defaults.
Launched on January 10, 2025, following a successful debut, Season 1 introduced significant content, including playable Fantastic Four characters (Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman initially, with Thing and Human Torch to follow), a new Battle Pass, maps, and a Doom Match mode. However, the simultaneous silencing of mods overshadowed these additions.
NetEase Games, the developer, had consistently warned against mod usage, citing violations of the game's terms of service. Previous actions included bans for specific mods, such as one featuring Donald Trump's likeness replacing Captain America. The Season 1 update appears to have preemptively addressed the issue through hash checking, a technique verifying data authenticity, effectively rendering existing mods unusable.
This widespread mod ban, while not entirely surprising given NetEase's stance and past actions, has disappointed many players who enjoyed customizing their characters. Some mod creators have even mourned the loss of their unreleased work on social media.
While some controversial mods featuring inappropriate content contributed to player complaints, the primary motivation behind the ban likely stems from Marvel Rivals' free-to-play business model. The game relies heavily on in-app purchases of character bundles containing cosmetic items. The availability of free, custom cosmetic mods could severely undermine the game's revenue generation. Therefore, the ban serves as a crucial, albeit potentially unpopular, business strategy.
