NetEase Games is making significant changes to the post-launch roadmap of Marvel Rivals, aiming to keep the live service momentum strong among its player base. The company plans to shorten the duration of its seasons and commit to introducing at least one new hero every month. This adjustment was hinted at during the new Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, which detailed the upcoming content.
Season 2, set to launch on April 11, will feature the new Vanguard hero, Emma Frost, at the outset. Mid-season, Ultron will join the roster, though his class details will be disclosed closer to his release. Both heroes are expected to bring fresh abilities to the game, enhancing the gameplay experience for fans. However, the most substantial changes to how playable heroes will influence matches are slated for Season 3.
In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which currently lacks a confirmed release date, NetEase will reduce the length of seasons from three months to two. This adjustment will allow for quicker major content updates while maintaining the promise of releasing at least one new hero every half-season. This means that after Emma Frost's launch, the wait for Ultron will be about a month and a half, but subsequent hero releases will come even faster.
Marvel Rivals' creative director, Guangyun Chen, shared in the Dev Vision video that the team has been focused on ensuring the game remains fun and engaging. "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all," Chen stated. He acknowledged the pressure from social media discussions to keep the game exciting, and agreed to some extent. Chen emphasized NetEase's goal to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes, which involves introducing new modes and a diverse roster of characters. The company will adjust its systems to accommodate this increased content flow, with more details to be shared before Season 3's launch.
NetEase recently unveiled details about Marvel Rivals Season 2, shifting from a vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This change will bring new outfits, maps, and characters, with further information to be released in the coming weeks.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, attracting 10 million players within three days. The game, a free-to-play superhero team-based PvP shooter, is available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On Steam alone, it achieved a peak of 480,990 concurrent players at launch, and Season 1 in January saw an impressive 644,269 concurrent players, ranking it as the 15th most-played game ever on Valve's platform.
Despite a decline in concurrent players since then, Marvel Rivals remains a popular title on Steam. The upcoming Season 2 is expected to boost player engagement, with further excitement anticipated for Season 3.
