Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new pixel art 'snakelike' roguelike game on Android called MageTrain. If you're a fan of Nimble Quest, you'll definitely see the resemblance as MageTrain heavily draws inspiration from it.
What's MageTrain Like?
MageTrain blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into an exhilarating experience. You guide a line of heroes that trail behind you, much like a snake. As you navigate through an arena, each hero autonomously attacks enemies.
Your primary role is to strategically position your heroes, deciding who leads and who supports, as their abilities shift based on their position in the train. At launch, MageTrain offers nine heroes, including one unique character who throws birds, each with distinct skills that vary depending on their role within the group.
The game features eight distinct dungeons, 28 enemy types, and 30 skills to enhance your team. Along your journey, you'll collect gold and power-ups. With its roguelike structure, each playthrough is unique, offering branching paths, upgrade choices, and the challenge to survive as long as possible.
Similar to games like Slay the Spire or FTL, MageTrain doesn't have fixed levels and you can't save your progress mid-run. If you crash into an obstacle or get overwhelmed by enemies, you'll have to start over.
It Isn't Slow-Paced
What makes MageTrain continuously engaging is the progress you make with each attempt, even upon failing. You'll quickly learn the art of balancing risk and reward, knowing when to play defensively, when to launch an all-out attack, and when to simply hold on for another half-minute.
MageTrain is now available on Android and is free to play. Be sure to give it a try on the Google Play Store.
