Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced that it is now fully focused on its next game, implementing a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. While fans eagerly await the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 later this year, the studio's attention has shifted to their upcoming project.
Last week, Swen Vincke, the head of Larian, took to Twitter to reminisce about the studio’s journey, highlighting the immense success of Baldur’s Gate 3. He hinted at more to come, saying, "But the story ain't over yet." This tweet has sparked excitement and curiosity among fans.
Got me all nostalgic - it really has been a incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind. https://t.co/eLSTv3CXb4

In a subsequent statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that Swen and the team's full attention is now on crafting their next title, signaling a shift away from media engagements.
While details about Larian's next game remain scarce, it's clear what it won't be: a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 or another Dungeons & Dragons game. Instead, Larian is eager to embark on a new, uncharted project, having previously struggled to generate internal enthusiasm for a Baldur’s Gate follow-up.
In November 2023, Vincke hinted at the studio’s next big game, expressing excitement and the desire to push boundaries beyond what was achieved with Baldur’s Gate 3. In July 2023, before the launch of Baldur’s Gate 3, Vincke also mentioned a potential return to the Divinity: Original Sin series, though he advised fans not to expect it soon.
"It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," Vincke said. "We will get back there at some point. We'll first finish [Baldur's Gate 3], and then take a break, because we will need to refresh ourselves creatively also. You’re seeing 400 developers putting their heart and souls into this. You’re getting the best of them and their craft into this game. And so I can tell you, it's quite a thing."
With Divinity not being the immediate next project, speculation abounds about what Larian might explore next. Could it be a new fantasy RPG, or perhaps a venture into science fiction or a modern-day setting? Maybe even a foray into an entirely new genre?
It seems we might have to wait years before we get a glimpse of Larian's next innovative endeavor.
