HBO is pushing forward with its highly anticipated Harry Potter television adaptation, landing its first major casting coup: Emmy-winning actor John Lithgow has been confirmed as the new Professor Albus Dumbledore.
The network has reportedly been searching for the perfect Dumbledore portrayal for months, with Lithgow officially accepting what he describes as a career-defining role during his interview with ScreenRant. The veteran actor revealed this casting marks a significant moment in his professional journey.
"The offer completely surprised me," Lithgow admitted. "I received the call while attending the Sundance Film Festival for another project. This decision carried tremendous weight—it will undoubtedly shape how audiences remember me in my later career."
He continued, "My excitement outweighs any hesitation. Seeing such talented creatives revisiting the Wizarding World makes this opportunity extraordinary. By series wrap, I'll likely be celebrating my 87th birthday, but I couldn't refuse this magical proposition."

While marking the project's first confirmed casting, Lithgow's involvement hasn't received official confirmation from HBO or Warner Bros. Discovery executives.
The streaming platform plans to faithfully adapt all seven original novels with completely fresh portrayals of beloved characters including The Golden Trio—Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley—alongside their Hogwarts contemporaries. Author J.K. Rowling will executive produce alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.
Despite Lithgow's public confirmation, the absence of additional casting announcements suggests production remains in relatively early development stages.
Lithgow brings decades of acclaimed acting credits to the role, from his Golden Globe-winning performance in "3rd Rock from the Sun" to his Emmy-awarded portrayal of Winston Churchill in Netflix's "The Crown." His extensive dramatic and comedic range positions him as an inspired choice for the wise yet enigmatic Hogwarts headmaster.
