When you start a new character in Stardew Valley, you have the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog to live on your farm as a pet. Initially, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but with the 1.6 update, you can now adopt multiple pets. To do this, you must first reach the maximum friendship level with your current pet.
To increase your pet's friendship level, ensure you provide a full bowl of water daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when the bowl fills automatically. Additionally, pet your animal once a day; a heart bubble appearing over their head indicates you've successfully interacted. You can monitor your pet’s friendship progress in the "Animals" tab in your pause menu.
Once your pet's friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notification from Marnie via mail, inviting you to adopt more pets from her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted your first pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.

Upon receiving Marnie's notice, head to her shop during its open hours from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, noting it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. At the counter, select the "Adopt Pets" option from the menu. You'll be presented with a selection of 12 Pet Licenses, including five variations each of dogs and cats, and two types of turtles. Each license comes with a cost, so ensure you have enough money to cover the expense.

After choosing your new pet, visit Robin’s carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each new addition. These bowls are essential not only for providing water but also for establishing a "home" for your pets, preventing them from running away due to neglect.
Pet Bowls are listed under Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu and cost 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood (obtainable with a Copper Axe or better). It's advisable to buy these bowls before adopting your pets to maintain their friendship points.

Marnie's Ranch also offers additional pet supplies like Doghouses and Cat Trees, which are purely decorative and do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
