God of War TV Series: A Fresh Start
The Show is Not Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the God of War adaptation. Despite having already completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
Key figures remaining on board include Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director Cory Barlog (executive producer), along with PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo's Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang. Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Importantly, the project remains uncancelled.
Continued Development Despite Setbacks
The Amazon and Sony partnership for the God of War TV series was first announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, building on the success of the 2018 God of War game reboot. This project is part of Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television, a strategy that led to the creation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. This initiative also includes a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, among others.
Other successful adaptations already released include Naughty Dog's Uncharted (2022) and the critically acclaimed The Last of Us (2023), with a second season slated for 2025. Further additions to this portfolio are the 2023 Gran Turismo film and this year's Twisted Metal TV series. Upcoming projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film, set for release on April 25, 2025.
