GeoGuessr Steam Edition, a reimagined version of the popular browser game, launched on Steam on May 8. Despite its recent release, it has quickly become the second-worst rated game on the platform. The browser version of GeoGuessr boasts an impressive 85 million players and a wide array of customization options, allowing players to tailor their opponents, map settings, spawn locations, and more, including urban or rural settings, geographical restrictions, and the ability to move, pan, or zoom—or choose not to (NMPZ). Additionally, it features numerous community-created custom maps.
In stark contrast, the Steam version has received overwhelmingly negative feedback. Out of over 3,000 user reviews since its launch, a staggering 84% are negative. Players are primarily frustrated with the game's monetization model and the limited gameplay options compared to the browser version. As of May 13, only 16% of reviews are positive.

Additional grievances include the inability to unlink or log out of a Steam account once linked to the browser version, the absence of a solo practice mode, and the presence of bots in the free amateur mode. Furthermore, purchasing features in the browser version does not grant access to them in the Steam edition. GeoGuessr clarifies in its FAQs that a browser subscription does not provide full access to the Steam Edition, except for those with an Elite Yearly subscription. The Steam Pass, unlike the browser's annual payment, is a one-time purchase for a year's access. The game is also in early access, allowing for refinements and new features based on player feedback.
Despite being labeled as free-to-play, the Steam version offers limited content, with just one mode (Duels) and one league (Amateur Division). To access higher ranks, players must subscribe to a $2.50 monthly plan, which requires a $30 upfront payment. No other modes are available at this time.

The browser version of GeoGuessr isn't free either, offering only three free rounds per day. To unlock all modes, players must subscribe to one of three premium tiers: Pro Basic at $2.49 a month, Pro Unlimited at $2.99 a month, or Pro Elite at $4.99 a month, the latter two of which include free access to the Steam game.
In an exclusive statement to IGN, GeoGuessr expressed excitement about the Steam release, which they said aligns with their vision of making the game accessible across platforms. They highlighted benefits such as connecting with Steam friends and enhanced anti-cheat functionality, which is crucial for combating cheating prevalent in the browser version.
Tomas Jonson, head of marketing, emphasized that the Steam version is in Early Access and that the team is committed to expanding and improving both free and paid experiences. He acknowledged the community's feedback on monetization, with many preferring a one-time purchase model. Jonson noted that due to ongoing costs associated with Google Street View data, the Steam edition follows a similar model to the browser game, with the main difference being that the Steam Pass is a non-recurring yearly purchase.
GeoGuessr plans to keep the Steam version in early access for at least six months, during which they will introduce new features and modes, and continue to refine the game based on player feedback. Jonson concluded by expressing appreciation for the community's engagement and feedback, promising continued collaboration as they develop the Steam Edition further.
