Game Director Quits CDPR, Starts Own Studio: Dawnwalker's Blood Explained

Following the releases of acclaimed titles like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, not all of the talented developers at CD Projekt RED remained with the company. Instead, some chose to embark on new ventures, including the creation of The Blood of Dawnwalker. This ambitious new project comes from Rebel Wolves, a studio established by CD Projekt RED veteran Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz and his team.

Tomaszkiewicz shared his motivations for leaving CD Projekt RED and starting Rebel Wolves. He expressed a desire to explore fresh and innovative ideas with his colleagues, stating, "I wanted to do something different with my friends, so I started Rebel Wolves." With a deep-rooted passion for role-playing games (RPGs), he and his team are eager to push the boundaries of the genre. Tomaszkiewicz believes that "these RPG rules can be developed and expanded," leading them to conceive some truly innovative concepts.

However, he acknowledged the challenges of convincing larger corporations to embrace new intellectual property and take risks. This realization led to the decision to found their own studio, where they could freely pursue their creative vision. Tomaszkiewicz noted, "Since it would be difficult to persuade any large corporation to change and do something novel... we came to the realization that if we wanted to do them, we would need to open our own studio."

At Rebel Wolves, the focus is on fostering strong interpersonal relationships and maintaining open communication within a smaller team. Tomaszkiewicz believes that "a small team, in my opinion, is capable of more because there is communication among members and discussing the vision is simpler." This environment allows for a more direct connection to the "creative fire" and the opportunity to craft something truly unique.

With The Blood of Dawnwalker, Rebel Wolves aims to bring their bold ideas to life, taking risks that larger studios might shy away from.
