Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling the exciting details of their upcoming Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy crossover, set to launch this summer. Over the weekend, they showcased a substantial selection of cards from both the main set and the Commander decks, sparking joy and excitement among fans as they recognized beloved elements from their favorite Final Fantasy games.
The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy offers both the traditional Commander decks and a booster-driven series, resulting in a vast array of cards to explore. The main set spans the entire mainline of Final Fantasy, covering games from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks hone in on four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, featuring Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola as their respective Commanders.

During the Magic: The Gathering panel at PAX East last Saturday, several cards were revealed that beautifully capture the journeys of iconic characters. For instance, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil features a mechanic that reflects his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. The summons from Final Fantasy are represented through a "Saga Creature" setup, which introduces powerful but temporary forces on the field, seamlessly blending Magic and Final Fantasy concepts.
Notable cards like Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, showcase artwork by Square's Tetsuya Nomura, depicting Sephiroth's evolution from a young fighter to his ultimate form, Safer Sephiroth, on the card Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

No Final Fantasy set would be complete without the iconic Cids. This set includes a Cid from each numbered Final Fantasy game, with a nod to the older Cid from Final Fantasy XV rather than his daughter, Cindy.

Following the panel, Wizards of the Coast released the decklists for the four Commander decks, and fans eagerly analyzed the art and additions to see how these four Final Fantasy games were adapted into Magic. The reception has been overwhelmingly positive.
Reprints and new versions of existing Magic cards cleverly integrate Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp features art inspired by the Jenova project from Final Fantasy 7.

Together, Forever evokes strong emotions for Final Fantasy 10 fans, drawing from the game's poignant narrative of a ruined land and a somber pilgrimage. Several cards reference key character moments, so be aware of potential story spoilers when exploring these decklists.
To add some levity, one of Final Fantasy 10's most iconic and memed moments is captured with Inspiring Call.

Wizards also found creative ways to incorporate Final Fantasy's lighter moments into the cards. Clever Concealment references the Wall Market scene with Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses, heading to Don Corneo's, complete with a fitting mechanic. The Secret Rendezvous card features four different versions of the Golden Saucer date scene from Final Fantasy 7, each with a potential date: Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

Fans have been delighted to discover the meticulous attention to detail that pays homage to the source material. The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, includes numerous references to the beloved MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card reflects the character's habit of disappearing and returning, creating an intriguing White/Black card. Additionally, the Archaeomancer's Map card uses a real location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.
Final Fantasy 14 players have been enjoying the cards, with humorous references like the "This is Thancred" meme and alternative flavor text on the Rite of Replication card, commemorating a famous speech from A Realm Reborn.
Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

The Tome of Legends card even depicts a Wondrous Tails book, complete with in-game details and missed four-in-a-row connections.

The attention to detail in these cards is truly impressive and has me eagerly anticipating the full set. While the Commander decks have received much love, reveals like Commune With Beavers from the panel have me excited to see how other Final Fantasy games are adapted into the complete Magic set.
Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy set is scheduled for release on June 13, 2025, with a pre-release weekend one week prior.
