Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.

The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, has fostered significant player engagement. Whether offering helpful guidance, playful misdirection, or humorous observations, these messages are considered by many to be a key part of the Soulsborne experience. However, this feature will be absent in Nightreign to maintain a streamlined, intense gameplay loop.

While the messaging system is being removed, other asynchronous features will not only return but be improved. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will be enhanced, allowing players to observe not only how others perished but also to loot their spectral remains.

FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG" prioritizing intense, multiplayer experiences with minimal downtime. This goal is reflected in the game's planned three-day structure and the removal of the messaging system. The focus is on delivering diverse, action-packed gameplay within shorter play sessions.

Nightreign was revealed at The Game Awards 2024, targeting a 2025 release, though a precise date remains unannounced.
