A new Street Fighter movie has chosen its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai. Known for his work on the surreal comedy series, The Eric Andre Show, Sakurai is set to helm the upcoming film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment. The Hollywood Reporter announced this exciting development, highlighting that Capcom, the game's creator, will be deeply involved in the project. Fans won't have to wait long either, with a release date already set for March 20, 2026.
This marks another cinematic venture for the iconic fighting game franchise, following the memorable 1994 film featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the unforgettable performance by the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Despite its mixed reviews at the time, the film has become a cult classic among fans.
While casting details remain under wraps, enthusiasts can look forward to seeing their beloved Street Fighter characters come to life on the big screen once more. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on Talk to Me. However, they left the project last summer, paving the way for Sakurai's unique vision. His involvement suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more absurdist and cartoonish style, which could resonate well with fans who appreciate the whimsical aspects of Street Fighter.
In the meantime, gamers can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more details, be sure to check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review.
