LocalThunk, a solo developer working under the pseudonym, achieved a remarkable feat in 2024 with their game, Balatro. This indie title defied expectations, selling over 5 million copies and becoming a genuine industry phenomenon, even winning accolades at The Game Awards 2024. The success surprised everyone, including the creator.
Initially, LocalThunk anticipated modest reviews, predicting a score in the 6-7 range given the game's unconventional design. However, Balatro received overwhelmingly positive critical reception, culminating in a 91 from PC Gamer and an average score of 90 across Metacritic and OpenCritic. This success stunned the developer, who admitted to a personal rating of only 8 out of 10 for their own creation.
Publisher Playstack's pre-release press engagement contributed significantly to Balatro's success. Yet, word-of-mouth marketing proved to be the true catalyst, driving sales 10 to 20 times beyond initial projections. The game's Steam launch saw a staggering 119,000 copies sold within the first 24 hours—an experience the developer described as utterly surreal.
The overwhelming success of Balatro has left its creator with a humble admission: there's no single formula for indie game success.
