It looks like Buffy might be slaying again at Hulu.
Variety reports that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is close to happening at Hulu, with star Sarah Michelle Gellar in talks to reprise her iconic role as the vampire-slaying hunter. While the series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar would appear as a recurring character, adding a thrilling connection to the original series.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, renowned for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, is in talks to direct and executive produce the reboot. Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are set to write and serve as showrunners, bringing their expertise to the project. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved in this reboot.
While Whedon was at the helm of the original *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* series and the movie it was based on, he faced allegations of fostering a toxic work environment during the production of both the TV show and its spinoff, *Angel*.Plot details for the reboot are scarce beyond the focus on a new Slayer and the potential for Gellar to reprise her role as Buffy.
The original series centered on Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen by fate to battle demons, vampires, and other supernatural beings. She was supported in her mission by her friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, as well as her Watcher, Rupert Giles.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, spanning seven seasons. A spinoff titled Angel was also produced during this time, and the universe was further expanded through a series of canon comic books.
