Black Beacon has recently launched on mobile devices, but we've had the privilege of diving into this Mythic Sci-Fi Action RPG before most, and we're excited to share our thoughts with you.
Black Beacon is an action RPG that prides itself on fast, fluid combat, enhanced by a unique character-swapping feature.
Shh! This Is A Library!
The game begins in the Library of Babel, a vast and enigmatic structure drawing inspiration from the biblical Tower of Babel and Jorge Luis Borges' short story of the same name. This library supposedly contains every possible combination of letters, housing every book ever written somewhere within its endless shelves.
You awaken in this peculiar setting, unsure of how you arrived, alongside a cast of vibrant characters who are equally puzzled. It seems you're destined for something great. Oh, and there's a twist: a giant spinning orb threatens to kill everyone within twenty-four hours. Welcome to your first day as a Seer! Better start exploring those bookshelves.
Jokes aside, the setting and story of Black Beacon are charmingly unconventional. From a library filled with nonsensical books to time travel and numerous mythological references (we won't spoil too much, but keep an eye on that bird!), the game throws you into the deep end of its narrative. If you find yourself confused, that's perfectly fine—it's likely the intended experience.
Send Me In, Coach
Black Beacon offers an engaging moment-to-moment experience, blending elements of an ARPG dungeon crawler with a customizable camera viewpoint. Whether you prefer a top-down view or a free camera that you can adjust with your other hand, the choice is yours, and we found the latter quite enjoyable, though it's largely a matter of personal preference.
As you navigate the Library's passageways, you'll progress through the story, which is divided into short, episodic sections, each containing several maps. Accessing these sections requires spending energy, but the game proved generous with this resource during our playthrough.
Your journey involves exploring areas, solving puzzles, hunting for hidden treasure chests, and battling enemies—distorted entities that are supposedly remnants of individuals the Library has "not fully digested." Yikes, indeed.
Combat in Black Beacon is both fast-paced and enjoyable, with a satisfying balance between button-mashing and strategic timing. Perfectly timed dodges grant invincibility frames, while well-timed heavy attacks can interrupt an enemy's move, sparing you the need to dodge.
A standout feature is the character-swap mechanic, which lets you switch fighters mid-battle. This turns combat into a tag-team affair, allowing you to swap out tired characters for fresh ones, even during attacks. Once you master the timing, it feels incredibly rewarding—until, of course, a mistimed dodge sends you flying down the hallway, courtesy of a giant monster.
Characters And Weapon Rolls
As a gacha game, Black Beacon includes a system for acquiring characters and weapons, with specific weapons designed for certain characters. Both can be leveled up, and while the system involves numerous ingredients, much of the management can be automated, easing the process.
You might encounter characters through the gacha before meeting them in the story, adding a layer of variety to your experience. The convoluted flow of time in the game serves this purpose well.
Overall, Black Beacon offers a quirky gacha experience with an esoteric narrative, supported by solid gameplay. We're eager to see how the game evolves post-launch.
Does this sound like your kind of adventure? Whether it's your street or a row of shelves in the giant library you now call home, you can dive into Black Beacon right now via the official website, App Store, or Google Play.
